Our Favorite Ways to Unplug

Taking a digital detox can improve your mental and physical health in a myriad of ways, from better sleep to healthier relationships. You might even discover a new hobby! We’ve listed several activities we love that are fun and keep our state clean, green, and beautiful. Try a few for the National Day of Unplugging, or incorporate them into your daily routine.

1. Take a walk or run around your neighborhood, and while you’re at it, pick up any trash you see along the way. If you haven’t already, sign our pledge against litter to join a community of Georgians dedicated to the cause.

2. Do something creative to make your neighbors smile. We’re thinking chalk art, fairy doors, or even your own version of Silly Walks.

3. Take a hike at one of our Georgia’s many beautiful state or national parks. Don’t forget to leave the trails cleaner than you found them!

4. Who says you have to travel far? Take a picnic to a green space near your own home—we challenge you to see if you can make it a zero-waste event. (Think metal straws, reusable dishware, and cloth napkins.)

5. Go for a bike ride, or bust out your roller skates. Get out and enjoy the beautiful space in which you live!

6. Take some time for outdoor yoga or meditation. You can go solo, or join a friend. Just be sure to space out your mats.

7. Start planning for your summer garden. You can make your outdoor space a pollinator paradise whether you have a yard, porch, or patio, and you can even grow your own food. A windowsill is all you need for a small burst of colorful flowers or an herb garden.

8. Plant a tree or shrub. It’s the perfect time of year to acclimate them to the soil.

9. Put out a bird feeder and see how many feathered friends you attract.

10. Build your own bird house.

11. Create a bee hotel, or purchase one from your nearest hardware store.

12. Start composting. You don’t even need outdoor plants to participate. Try a small kitchen bin, a pick-up service, or see if you can donate to a community garden.

13. Got old tires? How about transforming one into a swing, or adding a little paint and making your own planter?

14. Dig into your recycling bin and see what else you can make. Is there a bottle cap mosaic in your future, or a tin can lantern?

15. Get into some other upcycling projects. We love these ideas from Style Motivation. Who would’ve thought an old ladder would make such a great bookcase?

All you have to do now is step outside and get started! Just don’t forget to leave your cell phone behind.
